Maamanithan, starring Vijay Sethupathi and Gayathrie Shankar, was directed by Seenu Ramasamy and received a gold prize at this year’s Tokyo Film Awards. The announcement was made on Twitter by the movie director. “Happy to share that our Maamanithan feature film won (at the) Tokyo Film Awards 2022. Thanks to producer Yuvan Shankar Raja (sic),” the director wrote in the post.
Maamanithan reportedly took home the gold medal in the Best Asian Film category, followed by Takahiro Kawabe’s Love Song got silver, and Mart Bira’s Nomadic Doctor got bronze.
Maamanithan narrates the tale of a common man who wants to provide his children a solid education by enrolling them in a private school. He strikes a contract with a real estate developer to improve his income but is duped in the process. The issue he faces is explored throughout the rest of the movie. Gayathrie portrays his wife and doubles as the mother of their two children, while Vijay Sethupathi plays the character of an auto rickshaw driver.
After its release, Maamanithan received a tonne of appreciation from numerous sources. It was a “realistic classic,” according to director Shankar, who also said Vijay Sethupathi’s outstanding performance merited a National Award.
The late KPAC Lalitha, Guru Somasundaram, and Shaji Chen are among the performers of Maamanithan. The movie, which is currently streaming on Aha Tamil, was released in theatres on June 24. Maamanithan, produced by Yuvan Shankar Raja, has cinematography by Sukumar and editing by Sreekar Prasad.
