The Kerala Story Movie Review

The film “The Kerala Story” attempts to shed light on the issue of the radicalization and trafficking of young, vulnerable girls for the purpose of terrorism. However, the way in which director Sudipto Sen portrays this issue is far from sincere. The film comes across as more of a companion piece to “The Kashmir Files” and maintains a divisive tone. The gaze of the film is emotionally exploitative and, like the bigots in the film, it seems the makers are keen on converting the audience into hate mongers and spreading their message in society. The film is said to be based on real stories of innocent non-Muslim girls being recruited for the Islamic State. It follows three nursing students from Kerala who are brainwashed by an extremist group into believing that their gods are inferior and that only Islam can be the guiding light. The girls are lured in by love and lopsided logic and become trapped in a heinous game where they are used as pawns in a purported clash of civilizations. Overall, while the issue of the radicalization and trafficking of girls is an important one that deserves attention, “The Kerala Story” fails to do justice to the seriousness of the matter. The film’s burlesque portrayal and emotionally exploitative gaze do more harm than good and may only serve to perpetuate hate and division.
