Malayalam cinema started gaining attention in the mid-eighties. Mammootty and Mohanlal were behind it. Now, the famous South Indian actress and Malayalee Urvashi have spoken openly about this.

Urvashi says that before their films came out, Malayalam cinema was considered as ugly films outside Kerala and a number of similar films were released at that time.
Urvashi says that with the release of Mohanlal-Mammootty films in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh and their acceptance, the standard of Malayalam cinema has risen in the minds of outsiders.

Many of the stars’ films like New Delhi, Chitram, Third Time, A CBI Diary, Empire, Iyer the Great, Kalapani, and Sfatikam have been hugely successful outside Kerala. After them, Malayalam superstar Suresh Gopi has gained a lot of attention in other languages.
