Kamal Haasan to reunite with PS1 director after 35 years

After 35 years, Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan have reunited for a movie tentatively titled KH234. Although Mani Ratnam only collaborated with Kamal Haasan on one movie, “Nayakan,” the audience still vividly remembers the iconic 1987 action drama. It’s interesting that Kamal Haasan announced this significant news a day before his birthday.

The Vikram star tweeted as he shared the news: “Again, here we go! #KH234.” The Madras Talkies, Red Giant Movies, and Udhayanidhi Stalin will bankroll for Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s films. In the upcoming days, more information about the movie will be released.

After a long separation, the “Nayakan” combo has reunited, and their fans are inconsolable at this “surprise” development. Says Kamal Haasan: “I was equally excited 35 years before when I was about to start work with Mr. Mani Ratnam. Collaborating with a similar mindset is stimulating. This stimulation includes AR Rahman as well. Eagerly looking forward to presenting this venture with Mr. Udhayanidhi Stalin.”

Mani Ratnam, on the other hand, is “glad,” “honored,” and “eager” to work with Haasan once again. Released in 1987, Nayakan was a gangster film written and directed by Mani Ratnam. The film is still known and is fresh for Kamal Haasan’s powerhouse performance. It turned out to be a landmark film in Indian Cinema.

During an interview with Baradwaj Rangan, Mani Ratnam said he would never make a sequel to Nayakan. The PS1 filmmaker said, “Never. When you finish a film, you’re glad to be rid of it. You’re happy you don’t have to go back to that script again. Been there, done that.” On the other side, Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 2 will hit the theatres on April 28, 2023.
