The central government conforms to gold smuggling is in diplomatic baggage.The central government made this clear in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. The Center has told the Lok Sabha that one of the accused has a lot of influence and the case will be investigated. Anto Antony, NK Premachandran, and Dean Kuriakose raised the issue in the Lok Sabha. In July, Kochi Customs Preventive officials informed the Ministry of Defense that there was a suspicion of gold in the diplomatic bag from Dubai.
During the search, 30 kg of gold was found. So far, 16 people have been arrested in connection with the gold smuggling. However, Union Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur said in a statement that no further details could be released on the matter. Central agencies like NIA, Customs, and Enforcement are investigating the gold smuggling. The minister also said that one of the accused in the case has a huge influence. The Central Government in its reply also clarified the figures of gold imported to Kerala since 2015. So far this year, 123 kg of gold has been imported, the government said.
From the beginning of the case, Union Minister V Muraleedharan had said that the gold was not smuggled in diplomatic luggage. There were also allegations that Janam TV chief Anil Nambiar had asked Swapna Suresh, the accused in the case, to tell him that the gold was not smuggled through diplomatic luggage.
