Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal, who gave a tough fight to a veteran like Roger Federer with his strong play at the US Open, said that now he needs financial support but people are running away from him. Nagal made it to the finals of two tournaments of the Challenger circuit after the US Open. Due to lack of money, he had neither coach nor physio who could help him in the difficult situation in the Challenger Trophy played in Argentina.

Sumit Nagal, who is in Buenos Aires, said, “I was alone here. No one was here to help me. On the one hand, it is good that I am playing better tennis but it is not easy and I am very disappointed.” The Jhajjar player said that he is not getting support even after reaching the top 100 in the rankings.

Sumit Nagal said, “I still have the same budget as I was in 2018 but at that time my ranking was 350. Right now I need the most support. People are turning their backs on me. To do well at the US Open I am still alone. At the age of 22, I made it to the main draw and beat Federer in a set but it had no effect. It is quite disappointing that someone comes to invest in tennis Gay is not coming. ”

Sumit Nagal briefly made it to the government’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) in which financial assistance is provided to sportspersons. He was later forced out of it. In the TOPS scheme, the players with the possibility of medals in the Olympics are provided monthly financial assistance of Rs 50000. Now only doubles specialists Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan are getting support through TOPS.

Bhupathi also disappointed

Mahesh Bhupathi, a multiple-time Grand Slam champion who has identified Sumit Nagal’s talent, said it is a failure of the entire system if Nagal’s level player does not get support. He said, Sumit is a special talent and his performance in the last six months shows this. When you see talent like him who do not get support for the upcoming Olympics or the subsequent Olympics, I consider it a big failure of the whole system.

Help from Kohli Foundation

Sumit Nagal gets support from the Virat Kohli Foundation but it does not fulfill all the needs of a tennis player. Nagel said, Kohli’s organization is spending well but it does not meet all the expenses of the tennis player. The top 100 players need coaches, fitness, physio. A player like Nagal needs about two lakh 20 thousand Euros (1.5 million rupees) for annual expenses.

Sumit Nagal further said that according to me only a player can identify his talent. So I am trying to find a way through Gopi (Gopichand) and Malav and I hope they can show me the right path. I am still stuck. I need to find a way to get a coach for myself. I have played alone in most of the tournaments this summer. It is so funny that they say that if you need help tell us and when you ask them, they do not even give you an answer.
