The mythological drama film ‘Shakunthalam‘ directed by Gunasekhar with Samantha Ruth Prabhu in the lead role is facing a major failure at the box office. Reports are that the film is heading for the biggest failure in Telugu cinema. Times of India quoting trade analysts reports that the film, which hit the theaters on April 14, earned only Rs 50 lakh on the fifth day. The report also states that the net collection in India in the first five days was only Rs 6.85 crore.

Apart from Telugu, the film which was released in Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, and Kannada languages collected only 10 crores in the first week of its release. Not only for Samantha, but Sakunthalam also had the worst collection ever for a big-budget film in Telugu cinema. The film is produced by Neelima Guna under the banner of Guna Team Works in association with Sri Venkateswara Creations. Gunasekhar has written the screenplay for the film based on Kalidasa’s famous drama Abhijnana Shakunthalam, based on an epic story from the Mahabharata.
