Renowned Lebanese Singer And Actress Naja Sallam Mourned As She Passes Away

Renowned Lebanese singer and actress Naja Sallam, a prominent figure in promoting pan-Arabism through her music, has passed away at the age of 92. Born on March 13, 1931, Sallam made significant contributions to the musical landscape, especially during the mid-twentieth century. In the 1950s, Sallam’s melodious voice captured hearts and gained popularity, particularly after the nationalization of the Suez Canal by Egypt’s then-president, Gamal Abdel Nasser, in 1956. Sallam’s songs in support of Egypt during this time elevated her fame in the country, though it also drew ire from Britain, France, and Israel, eventually leading to the Second Arab-Israeli War. In recognition of his support, Nasser honored Saja Sallam with Egyptian citizenship.

Aside from her musical prowess, Sallam showcased her talent on the silver screen during the 1950s and 1960s, starring in several notable Arabic-language films.
