Pro Kabaddi: Can PKL 2019’s top defensive unit stop Pardeep Narwal today?

Published

on

In Match 87 of Pro Kabaddi 2019, Patna Pirates, led by Pardeep Narwal, will lock horns with Jaipur Pink Panthers at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Indoor Stadium in Kolkata on Thursday. Pardeep Narwal will be playing his 100th match today, however, the prime concern for Patna Pirates’ coach would be if support raiders can revive him quickly. No other raider, barring Pardeep, has been able to make any impression as the three-time champions are placed at the bottom of PKL 2019 points table.

Pardeep in prime form, but can his team revive him quickly enough?

In the last 6 matches, Pardeep Narwal averaged close to 15 raid points per game and in the previous match against Tamil Thalaivas he had his best performance of the season scoring 26 raid points. He has 5 Super 10s in the last 6 games and even in the one game where he didn’t, he finished with 9 raid points.

Despite Pardeep’s brilliant performance Patna won just one of the previous 6 matches, their last match against a hapless Tamil Thalaivas team. Even in that match, when Pardeep was tackled twice, the team took more than 7 minutes to revive him. The second best raider in the team is averaging a measly 2.0 raid points per game and none of the other raiders, who made at least 50 raids, has a raid strike rate above 30.

Will Jaipur miss Amit Hooda’s services against Patna Pirates?

Jaipur without the presence of Amit Hooda haven’t had much problems in their defence. In fact, they average better in terms of tackle points without him. However, they concede three raid points extra on an average without Amit Hooda this season. They will be facing Patna, who have one of the best raiders in Pardeep Narwal.

Published

on

The seventh season of Pro Kabaddi League (PKL 2019) has entered in the 10th phase with Jaipur leg getting underway on Day 55. The race for PKL playoffs has intensified with less than a month remaining for the final showdown. The PKL 2019 playoffs will kick-start from October 14. The first team to get eliminated from the playoffs race was Tamil Thalaivas after U Mumba defeated Gujarat Fortunegiants on Day 56 of Pro Kabaddi. Meanwhile, Dabang Delhi and Bengal Warriors became the first two teams to register their place in the playoffs.

How many teams can qualify for playoffs?

The top two teams in Pro kabaddi 2019 points table will directly qualify for semi-finals while the remaining four will play Eliminator 1 and Eliminator 2. The winners of the Eliminators will play the PKL 2019 semifinals. The winner of semifinal matches will play the PKL 2019 finals on October 19, 2019.

Here are the playoffs chances of teams featuring on Day 57?

Dabang Delhi playoff chances

Thanks to Bengal Warriors’ win on Sunday (Day 55), Dabang Delhi along with Bengal are assured of a playoff spot as they will not fall out of the top six under any circumstances now. However, Delhi will look to consolidate their position in the league standings. They have played 16 matches so far and earned 69 points, winning 13 matches while losing only two. They still have to play six matches.

Bengaluru Bulls playoffs chances

Bengaluru Bulls after Sunday’s results find themselves in the 6th place, but with a win against Dabang Delhi on Monday could take them to the third spot but if Haryana manage to win against Patna today, then they will retain the third spot and Bulls will move to the fourth spot despite a win.

Bengaluru have 50 points in 17 matches played so far with nine wins and eight defeats.

Haryana Steelers playoffs chances

If Haryana Steelers lose this match by a difference of more than 7 points and Bengaluru Bulls win their match against Dabang Delhi, Haryana will slip to 4th place. Haryana have 54 points in 16 matches so far with 10 wins and five defeats.

Patna Pirates playoffs chances

Of all the matches to be played on Day 57 of Pro Kabaddi 2019, Patna Pirates have a stiff chance to register a place in the playoffs. Patna Pirates have won only six matches of 17 and are placed at the 10th position on PKL points table with 38 points. If they manage to win their today’s fixture against Haryana Steelers, they will move to eighth position and still have to win the remaining four matches to keep playoffs hope alive.

The two raiders are also among the best when it comes to picking up multi-point raids in Pro Kabaddi 2019. Pawan has been a master at picking up the bonus and touch point raids with 33 such raids so far this season, the highest among all raiders. Pawan will look to break the Cover trap

Puneri Paltan did the double over Bengaluru Bulls this season. Much of their success was down to how well they tackled Pawan Sehrawat using their covers to trap him in the middle of the mat. In total, Pune tackled Pawan 11 times combined in the two matches. Even looking at by position, most of his failed raids have come against the right corner and right cover positions. He had more trouble against the right side of defences which is where he is likely to battle Ravinder Pahal and Vishal Mane. He has been tackled 21 times in the middle of the mat just ahead of the baulk line as well as in the area to the left of it which is where the successful dashes have come from.
