The gangster drama Kaapa, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and based on the Shankumukhi novel by GR Indugopan, premiered in theatres on December 22. A big digital platform acquired the OTT rights to the film, which also stars Asif Ali, Anna Ben, and Aparna Balamurali, and is set to start streaming it in January 2023.

The actor plays Kotta Madhu, a neighborhood thug-turned-gangster with political ambitions, in the movie, which is the actor-director duo’s second collaboration this year following Kaduva.

Anand Anirudhan and Binu Trivikraman, played by Asif Ali and Anna Ben, are a young couple who move to Thiruvananthapuram at the beginning of the film. The former learns that, due to the criminal actions that a gang has allegedly claimed Binu was involved in, she has been added to a list of criminals under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act. Anand must first make Kotta Madhu(Prithviraj) believe that she’s innocent and it’s not an easy task considering that his gang had murdered her brother in daylight and her former neighbor is out for his blood.

Kaapa, which was co-produced by the writer’s union FEFKA, has been acquired by OTT service provider Netflix. The platform is also offering to stream for Prithviraj’s Jana Gana Mana, which was his first theatrical release following the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the actor recently said that Shaji Kailas’ film adaptation of Indugopan’s Shankumukhi, Kaapa, isn’t a “line-by-line rendition” of the book. Dawn Vincent has composed the score for the movie. Jagadeesh, Nandu, and Dileesh Pothan all play important roles.

Vilayath Buddha, an upcoming film by Prithviraj, is similarly based on a book by Indugopan. The writer, who previously wrote Oru Thekkan Thallu Case, which is currently streaming on Netflix, had stated that the actor had signed on for another film based on his work.
