With the single song “Kalakkatha Sandhana” from the action comedy “Ayyappanum Koshiyum,” which was helmed by the late filmmaker Sachy, Nanchamma very literally won the hearts of every Malayali audience. For the movie “Ayyappanum Koshiyum,” Nanchamma received the Best Female Playback Singer Award at the 68th National Film Awards.
The Malayali audience showed their enthusiasm for Nanchamma, an Indian folk singer from a tribal clan in Kerala, as she performed the song “Kalakkatha” in the action comedy “Ayyappanum Koshiyum.” She wrote the song herself in the Irula language, and Jakes Bejoy created the music for Sachy’s film. For the film “Ayyappanum Koshiyum,” Nanchamma previously won a special award at the Kerala State Film Awards for 2020.
In Sachy’s directed film, Nanchamma also had a big part as Kannamma’s mother, the wife of Ayyappan Nair, who was portrayed by actor Biju Menon, who won the Best Supporting Actor Award at the 68th National Film Awards for the same film. Also, the movie’s leading actor, Prithviraj Sukumaran, posted a touching message on Instagram. It read: “Congratulations Biju chettan, Nanchamma, and the entire action team of Ayyapanum Koshiyum. And Sachy..I don’t know what to say man… Wherever you are..I hope you’re happy…coz I’m proud of you..and will be forever.”
At the 68th National Film Awards, “Ayyappanum Koshiyum” took home several prizes, including Best Direction, Best Supporting Actor, Best Female Playback Singer, and Best Action Direction.
