The Central Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rains in Kerala. A red alert has been declared in Alappuzha, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Idukki, and Kasaragod districts. An orange alert has also been declared in various districts.

The Central Meteorological Department has issued heavy rain warnings for Alappuzha, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Idukki, and Kasaragod districts on August 9. It is forecast to receive more than 204.5 mm of rain in 24 hours.

Receiving such heavy rainfall will increase the risk. The Central Meteorological Department has issued the highest alert in these districts, the Red Alert.

Wayanad and Idukki districts, which have been receiving heavy rains for the last four days, and those in the Red Alert districts have been warned to evacuate to camps immediately. Landslides and mudslides are expected to intensify during the night and people will have to be relocated during the day as a precaution.

Night traffic to hilly areas should be completely avoided. An order will be issued prohibiting night traffic to the hilly region from 7 pm to 7 pm. The public must fully cooperate with this.

Orange Alert

  • August 9, 2020: Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad
  • August 10, 2020: Kannur, Malappuram. The Central Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert in the districts. Extreme levels of rainfall are forecast in isolated areas. The meteorological department has forecast heavy rainfall of 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours.
  • Yellow Alert
    • August 9, 2020: Thiruvananthapuram.
    • August 10, 2020: Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kasaragod.
    • August 11, 2020: Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod. The Central Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert in the districts.

    The public and government agencies need to be extra vigilant as the Central Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rains. Extreme caution should be exercised in low-lying areas, riverbanks, and landslide-prone areas in districts where a red, orange and yellow alert has been declared. Those in landslide-prone and flood-prone areas in 2018 and 2019, those living in areas identified by the Geological Survey of India and the expert committee of the State Disaster Management Authority as hazardous areas or uninhabitable areas and local bodies and government agencies should complete the precautionary measures.
