Ranjit Sankar is back with a new thriller, Kamala. Written and directed by himself, Kamala is subtlety political and edgy in equal measures. In spite of being a thriller, Kamala isn’t a fast-paced film. However, keeping the suspense alive, it makes you take a second look at each character and situation in the movie. Aju Varghese is in the path to reinvent himself. It almost feels awkward seeing him not crack a single joke. However, Aju holds his own. Ruhani Sharma plays the titular character Kamala. She speaks fluent Malayalam, however, the lip-sync of the dialogues is a sorry distraction.
Shot in picturesque locales, the cinema provides some interesting shots. Good editing and cinematography sure helps the narrative. The background score is in tandem with the suspenseful theme. A shrewd and cunning real estate agent, Safar is en route one of the most high-end deals of his career. Amidst managing the deal, Kamala, a vagabond traveler he met online, comes to meet him. Circumstances prompt them to spend the day together. But soon it becomes clear that none of the incidents are mere coincidences. And that Kamala is more than what meets the eye. What are the mysteries that she hides? What is she up to? And why is she right in the middle of Safar’s business affairs? Is she even real or is this a paranormal inference?
