John Paul: A Malayalam film screenwriter died at the age of 72

Malayalam scriptwriter John Paul died on Saturday, April 23, at a hospital in Kochi, Kerala. He died at 1 pm on April 23. He was 71 years of age and was apparently going through treatment for different age-related ailments in the Kochi hospital for the last two months.

John Paul has composed the screenplays of more than 100 Malayalam films and was quite possibly the most famous scriptwriter. A portion of the notable movies that he composed are Marmaram, Vida Parayum Munpe, Yathra, Chamaram, Kathayariyathe, Asthram, Ormakkayi, Kathodu Kathoram, Purappadu, Orukkam, Randam Varavu, Chamayam, Aksharam, Kattathe Kilikkoodu, and Vellathooval.

A couple of days prior, John Paul’s friend and well-wisher shared a post mentioning help for the scriptwriter’s treatment. From that point forward, the Kerala Government apportioned Rs 2 lakh for John Paul’s treatment from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. He was also helped by his fans.

John Paul was also the founder and general secretary of MACTA (Malayalam Cine Technicians Association), an association for film technicians. In 2017 he acted in the film C/O Sairabanu with Manju Warrier. He was also seen in a prominent role in Gangster, alongside Mammootty.

Born to P V Paulose and Rebecca on October 29, 1950, in Kochi, Paul had been associated with literary works since his schooldays. He secured a master’s degree in economics from Maharajas College, Kochi. Before venturing into screenwriting, Paul was a bank officer.
His association with the directors like Bharathan and Mohan had given Mollywood some of its most beautiful movies in the 1980s.

Paul is survived by his wife Aisha Elizabeth and daughter Jisha.
