The critically praised courtroom drama “Jai Bhim” by T.J. Gnanavel, which stars Suriya, Lijomol Jose, and Manikandan in the key roles, will be one of the Tamil films shown at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne this year, which runs from August 12 to August 30. A courageous activist-lawyer battles for justice when a poor tribal guy who has been wrongfully accused of robbery escapes from police custody in the movie.
Some of the other thought-provoking Tamil films in this year’s festival include the docu-fiction movie ‘The Road to Kuthriyar’ and ‘Perianayaki’ ‘The Road to Kuthriyar’, directed by Bharat Mirle, stars Dhruv Athreye, Chinna Dorai, Parvathi Om, M.K. Raghavendra, Mariammal and Saravana Dhruv. In the movie, a wildlife researcher from the city is tasked with performing a “mammal survey” of Tamil Nadu’s 600-square-kilometer Kodaikanal Wildlife Sanctuary.
He walks through the park using a GPS unit and maps from forty years ago. He hires a tribesman from the neighborhood to act as his guide. The researcher’s perception of the marginalized changes when an accident sends him to the guide’s hamlet and removes the veil of “civilization” from his eyes.
Jeyagowri Sivakumaran is the lead of Bala Murali Shingade’s “Perianayaki.” The protagonist of the novel is 56-year-old Perianayaki, a Sri Lankan immigrant who works a dead-end job stacking shelves at the neighborhood supermarket every day. Her inability to speak English makes it difficult for her to blend in and establish trusting relationships. Perianayaki is compelled to come to terms with the bittersweet facts of the anniversary of her wedding.
