The Kerala High Court has stopped the screening of the movie ‘Kantara’, which includes the song ‘Varaharoopam’, in a copyright infringement case. Justice A Badaruddin’s bench stopped the screening of the film featuring Varaharoopam in the judgment granting anticipatory bail to the film’s producer and director Rishabh Shetty, accused in the case. The crew of Kantara got bail in a case filed by the Kozhikode town police on the complaint of Mathrubhumi, who owns the film. The film has been banned in the case of infringement of copyright by Thaikudam Bridge and Mathrubhumi, who composed the song ‘Navarasam’.
The investigation officer’s report states that the Varaharoopam song has apparent similarities with the Navarasam of Thaikudam Bridge. Therefore prima facie copyright infringement can be said to have occurred. A detailed investigation is imperative in this situation. Copyright is a right that must be protected. Violation of this is a serious offense under Section 63 of the Copyright Act. This is why the court has banned the film and granted bail to the accused. The court also asked the accused producer and director Rishabh Shetty to appear before the investigating officer on February 12 and 13 between 10 am and 1 am.
