Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar told today that on Saturday 28 March, the telecast of ‘Ramayana’ will start again on Doordarshan’s national channel on the demand of the public. He said that the first episode would be at 9.00 am and the second episode would be at 9.00 pm. Not only this, the government is also exploring the possibility of re-airing BR Chopra’s famous serial ‘Mahabharata’. Ramanand Sagar’s ‘Ramayana’ was telecast for the first time in 1987 and BR Chopra’s ‘Mahabharata’ was aired for the first time in 1988 on Doordarshan.

In the late 80s, ‘Ramayana’ and ‘Mahabharata’ were such that the roads used to get deserted at the time of their telecast. At the time of their broadcasting, the atmosphere of the roads outside was as if curfew had been imposed. Both serials are considered to be the most successful serials of the Indian TV world. It was watched by over six and a half million viewers in 55 countries. The popularity of their characters was such that Arun Govil and Deepika Chikhaliya, who played Ram and Sita in the Ramayana, were seen in the houses as Ram-Sita.
