Ganga fell in love with Mahadeva; Revisiting ‘Manichithrathazhu’

Ganga of Manichitrathazhi comes to mind when reviewing the roles of female characters in Malayalam cinema. If there matiyavatta films, Madhu muttattinre composed by Fazil directed to ‘Manichithrathazhu.’ The film, which came out in 1993, is still as bright as ever. Every time we look at the scene, we sometimes get distracted to see if there is something missing. Every time you see something in the movie, some of the things that are kept secret are uncovered.

A young woman named Ganga is coming to Madampally, where the ghost is said to be living with her husband Nakulan. This is the first time Ganga is living in Calcutta. She arrives at that spacious and beautiful house, first looking for a place to put the books. She asks Nakula’s cousin Alli. They come to the Thekkini, locked in a bell, looking for a room with windows that open to the mantop.

Most of the books that Ganga possesses are collections of poetry of Mahadeva. Here the filmmaker makes clear the romantic mind of the heroine. Nakulan is always busy in front of the computer. Ganga finds her happiness in the poems of Mahadeva. There is nothing deliberately included in the story to suggest that there is an intense love affair between the husband and wife. In neither case can they see a will or chemistry between them. Nakulan is shown in the film as a person who works in front of a computer even in his bedroom. Ganga says, “Nukuleta, please call me when I go to bed”
