In Etharkkum Thunindhavan, Suriya plays Kannabiran, an advocate who remains by the side of equity and safeguards the blameless people. At the plot level, Etharkkum Thunindhavan basically moves along on unsurprising lines. Yet, as he did with his movies like Vamsam and Kadaikutty Singam, Pandiraj roots the characters with very specific backgrounds, which lends some freshness. Like the background in which the film occurs. Kannabiran lives in Thennaadu, a village that appreciates ladies. Inba lives in the adjoining town Vadanaadu, whose men wed the young ladies of Thennaadu. Yet, there has been some rivalry between the two towns ever since the suicide of a Thennaadu woman who had been married off to a Vadanaadu guy.The director adroitly utilizes this to infuse a few tension and humor into the sentiment among Kannabiran and Aadhini, who is from Vadanaadu. A portion of the humor works, on account of Devadarshini, who plays Aadhini’s mom Anjumani. Yet, the bundle of comics that are essential for the cast are a setback. Indeed, even Soori, who for the most part sparkles in this director’s movies, is not really entertaining. However, the director’s attempt to balance ‘family-friendly’ scenes with the more serious portions leads to an uneven tone that is sometimes very clashing.
In any case, what raises this nonexclusive masala film is its dynamic standpoint. It is certainly great to see a star vehicle that conveys the right message, particularly with regards to ladies’ empowerment. Like Ajith in Nerkonda Paarvai, Suriya, who is charming and earnest, uses his stature really well in these portions.
