Dramatist Bijay Mishra passes away

Bhubaneswar: Noted playwright Bijay Mishra has passed away. He was 83 years old. He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar due to old age problems. Bijay Mishra was one of the pioneers of the modern theater movement in Odisha. Bijay Mishra made his debut in 1960 by writing the play Janani. His play ‘Tata Niranjana’ is highly acclaimed and has been translated into many languages.

Bijay Mishra has received many national and state honors. His book Vanaprastha won the Central Sahitya Akademi Award. Bijay Mishra has also won the Central Sangeet Natak Academy Award.

Bijay Mishra has written screenplays for several films. Jalabhara and Rajneegandha are hit films. Bijay Mishra has produced 60 plays and scripts for 55 films. Last year, the Odisha government was awarded the Jayadeva Award for its contribution to cinema. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has condoled the death of Bijay Mishra.
