The Director-General of the World Health Organization has said that scientists estimate that the world may get the vaccine of Kovid-19 even a year or so ago. He has also spoken of the importance of global cooperation in developing, producing and distributing the vaccine.
In a meeting with the European Parliament’s Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, Tedros Ghebreyesis said, however, it would be a challenge to make the vaccine available and distribute it to all. This requires political will.
Currently, more than 100 Covid-19 vaccines are in various stages of candidate development. The epidemic, he said, has highlighted the importance of global solidarity. Also, health should not be seen as a cost, but as an investment.
He said that all countries of the world should work on primary health care and strengthening their preparedness for crisis situations. He also stressed the need for the leadership of the European Union globally.
The Director-General admitted that all had made mistakes. He told the members that an independent panel would evaluate the response given by the WHO to the epidemic so that lessons from the mistakes can be taken. This panel will start its work soon.
