The Enforcement Directorate has not arrested former Finance Minister P Chidambaram in the INX media case. Enforcement Directorate team returned to Tihar Jail after questioning Chidambaram. Chidambaram’s wife Nalini and her son Karthi Chidambaram went to the jail premises for interrogation.
The Enforcement Directorate had approached the court on the day when Chidambaram was asked to question him. Solicitor General Thushar Mehta had approached the court arguing that Chidambaram should be arrested. Special CBI Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar had granted permission to ED to interrogate Chidambaram and arrest him if necessary. Tihar Jail authorities have been asked to make necessary arrangements to question Chidambaram. At the same time, the court had directed that the interrogation be held in honor of Chidambaram’s dignity and privacy.
The Delhi CBI court on Monday granted permission to file an arrest in Tihar jail after interrogation. Soon after the interrogation, there was strong speculation that the Enforcement Directorate would go into custody. Senior counsel Kapil Sibal said that even though Chidambaram was brought to court yesterday, it would be appropriate to avoid interrogation and arrest in court. The CBI had allowed Chidambaram to be interrogated in Tihar Jail today. The court also ordered the application for custody after his arrest. Enforcement came into question during the Supreme Court hearing on Chidambaram’s bail application.
P Chidambaram, who was taken into custody by the CBI in connection with a corruption case on October 21, has been remanded to jail number 7 in Tihar since September 5. P Chidambaram’s son Karthi Chidambaram is accused of receiving bribes and privileges as a reward for paving the way for INX Media to receive foreign funds.
