Anjaam Pathira Review

It’s said that evil can manifest in anyone if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time. Anjaam Pathira by Midhun Manuel Thomas shows how a wave of violence gets kicked-off, with a certain unfortunate turn of events that happened in someone’s life. And how such scenarios might sometimes create unforgiving killers. Psychologist Anwar Hussain (Kunchacko Boban) gets introduced to the murder case of a policeman by his friend and cop Anil (Jinu Joseph). As he tries to connect the circumstantial clues, the situation gets complicated further with more deaths, puzzling both Anwar and the police department. How they nab the culprit and the backstories of the events form the turf of Anjaam Pathira.

Murderous psychopaths lurking in the shadows and the reasons that made them so sinister have always fascinated both movie makers and audiences alike. Anjaam Pathira gets most of the elements right to tell such a tale in the most engaging fashion – disturbing yet curiosity-triggering murders, a killer who employs gruesome techniques on victims, an ace psychological investigator, creepy masks, the dark descent in someone’s life that makes them a killer, simple, yet suspenseful development of events and a dimly lit atmosphere in which the tale unfurls. A genuine attempt to make the story as a novel yet relevant in the current scenario is also evident. Kunchacko Boban gives the right demeanor to Anwar Hussain, as do the rest of the cast. The performances of Mathew Thomas and Indrans, though just in a few scenes, are also arresting enough for one to feel uneasy and so is the portrayal of the bad man by another prominent actor, whose name is best kept under wraps so we don’t let out any spoilers. The portrayal of the gruesome acts of the murderer is also shown without traumatizing the viewers too much.

At the same time, the intro portions, which were probably woven into the larger plot intending to give us a better understanding of the developments, doesn’t seem to add much to the story. The climax sequence also isn’t as hard-hitting as one would expect, going by how the story tightens its screws till big revelations are made. Certain critical questions viewers might feel within are only answered by painting word pictures, making their effect on the story trivial. The stifling, yet enjoyable, tension that should bind one till the end in such a story is also lost, just about half an hour before the movie wraps up. The film ties together a handful of gruesome killings to tell its story and those who have the stomach for it can find Anjaam Pathira a movie worth its running time.

It stars DhanushSneha, Mehreen Pirzada in the lead roles and Naveen Chandra as the antagonist. The film features music composed by Vivek-Mervin. It marks the second collaboration between Dhanush and director Durai Senthilkumar after Kodi. The film depicts Adimurai, an ancient martial art that was practiced by the Cholas, and existed even before Kalaripayattu. For their roles, Dhanush and Sneha underwent martial arts training prior to the commencement of the filming.

Pattas Review

Every once in a while, our Tamil filmmakers stumble upon a forgotten or dying ancient art form and come up with a film glorifying it and bringing it to public consciousness – even if for a brief while. With Pattas, Durai Senthilkumar wants to do for Adimurai, a less heard of the traditional martial art form from Tamil Nadu, what Indian did for Varmakalai and 7aum Arivu did for Bodhi Dharman. But the problem is he seems to have been carried away by the novelty of Adimurai and gives us a formulaic action drama that is predictable from start to finish. Forget plot structure and scenes, even the lines here hold no surprise.

The film begins in 2001 with a woman, Kanyakumari (Sneha, solid), being sent to prison for murder. The action then cuts to the present where Shakthi alias Pattas (Dhanush, earnest) is leading a happy-go-lucky life that involves some small-time thievery and playful retaliation against Sadhana (Mehreen Pirzada), the pompous neighborhood girl. The latter makes him steal from her workplace, a mixed martial arts academy run by Nilan (Naveen Chandra, ineffective). But little does he realize that he has a history with Nilan until he meets Kanyakumari, his long-last mother, who wants him to avenge the murder of his father, Thiraviyam (Dhanush, again) and bring glory to Adimurai, the ancient martial arts form that he practiced.

It is these portions featuring Thiraviyam that are the saving grace of Pattas. This flashback is filled with drama, but surprisingly, rather than flesh out this segment, detailing the tragic turn of the friendship between Thiraviyam and Nilan, and the latter’s strained relationship with his father, an Adimurai guru played by Nasser, Durai Senthilkumar’s writing is content with dealing in broad strokes that these scenes are only half as impactful emotionally as they should have been, and feel rushed. But there is an inherent rousing quality to them, amplified by Vivek-Marvin’s punchy score.

On the other hand, the director spends too much time on the Pattas-Sadhana track, which isn’t as funny as he wants it to be. There is no chemistry between the two leads, with Mehreen’s performance lifeless and Dhanush’s youthful antics coming across as juvenile. And even the portions that follow the film’s big revelation lack impact. Even the drama that we associate with the sports film genre is lacking in the MMA contest scenes, with Pattas made to take on lackluster opponents. After the strong show in Kodi, it is a surprise that Durai Senthilkumar has gone to his middling Kaaki Sattai form and given us this Pattas with no bang.
